History of ARDSI
Alzheimer’s & Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) was established in 1992 by Dr. Jacob Roy Kuriakose along with few like-minded individuals. Based in a small village in Kerala, Dr. Roy realised that India did not have the required infrastructure or care facilities when his father was diagnosed with dementia. With the support of his peer groups, Dr. Roy established the first care centre in Kunnamkulam, Kerala, under the aegis of the Alzheimer’s Disease International, UK.
It was in 1994, after witnessing a Delhi-based family’s desperation while seeking help for a patient with severe memory loss, that Mrs. Nirmala Narula established the Delhi Chapter of Alzheimer’s & Related Disorder Society of India (ARDSI). There was a pressing need to create a local support group by utilizing physical, emotional and scientific resources. By collaborating with the ARDSI National office in Kerala, Ms. Narula initiated the services of the Delhi Chapter, which have continuously grown and evolved over the years.

Our vision at ARDSI is to facilitate the creation of a dementia-friendly society. We aim to foster a
community that is aware of the types of dementia and one that actively works towards supporting
patients in different ways.

As an organization, we have outlined objectives
that will contribute towards creating a dementia-
friendly community and that will help us make a
better world for people affected by dementia
To give help, support, succor and information to families of persons affected by dementia
To initiate and encourage the formation of support groups and dementia care centres
To secure from government and non-government sources, better facilities for the care of those affected by dementia
To bring to the attention of various Government agencies, the needs of people with dementia
To highlight the importance of having dementia recognised as a disability of the elderly so that they are placed on par with people suffering from other handicaps and resources are allocated in a more equitable manner
To encourage training of healthcare
personnel in geriatric care and dementia
To educate general public about
dementia through available media
To arrange and conduct training programs for caregivers and to organize seminars, medical camps and to conduct relief work
To provide guidance in legal matters to people with dementia and their families and to intervene on their behalf whenever & wherever necessary.
To provide incentive and encouragement to other voluntary organizations and individuals engaged in research in Alzheimer’s and related disorders and in the care and management of people with dementia.
To do all such things that are incidental or conducive to the achievement of any of the above mentioned objectives

Services Provided By ARDSI Delhi Chapter
The services provided by the ARDSI Delhi Chapter are aimed specifically at reducing the burden of Alzheimer’s and to prevent the toll that it takes on the family members, caregivers and those who are diagnosed with dementia. The
services provided by the chapter include Day Care facilities (currently on hold due to the Pandemic), counselling and guidance for family members, training for home care and organizing memory clinics.
Dementia Day Care
ARDSI Delhi Chapter has been operating a day care centre since 2011 at Tuglakabad Extension. This centre serves as a vital relief space for family caregivers, allowing them some personal time while their loved ones are looked after in a compassionate and specialized manner. The centre is staffed with trained professionals who maintain a structured routine that includes prayers, personalized care, activities, vitals checks, cognitive exercises, and nutritional support. Clients leave the centre feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
ARDSI provided technical expertise and HelpAge India sponsored the unit. The centre accommodated up to 10 people. A van picked up the patients from their homes and dropped them back in the evening. The centre was staffed by trained carers, nursing assistants, ARDSI volunteers and visiting doctors including a psychiatrist. The daily routine began with a prayer followed by yoga, games, television, lunch, rest and refreshments in the evening.Our Day Care Centre is currently closed due to the pandemic. We are receiving inquiries on a daily basis. This is testimony to the fact that people are becoming more aware. We expect greater memberships and hope to serve more people in the facility, as soon as we can make it operational again.
